The project, presented by Ceramiche Gardenia Orchidea S.p.A., aims to industrialize a new process useful to manufacture the surface of innovative natural stones, like tiles, without using high quantity of water and abrasive with silicon carbide, used in the actual working process.
This will involve important environmental progresses in the efficient exploitation of raw materials, in the water consumption and in waste production.
The new process envisage the dry use of air and powders of raw materials in the surface finishing processes of some materials for floor and covering, as ceramic tiles and natural stones, allowing the recycling of the abrasive materials as raw material, water saving and the elimination of high quantity of sludge deriving from the dump processing with silicon carbide grinding wheels, that make the refuse a special waste.
This project will be developed with the help of the European Community, through the Programme CIP Eco Innovation
The activities which will lead to the plant and the production of the natural-stone-like materials will include six work packages (WP):
WP1: Management
WP2: Sedimented press die loading design and realization
WP3: Micro-structuring and sieving system design and realization
WP4: Production energy and environmental balance of the full plant
WP5: Marketing and dissemination activities
WP6: Common Dissemination Activities
The expected results, for an expected production of 500’000 m2/year of natural-stone-like tiles, are the abolition of the production of 500 ton/year of levigation sludge (measured as dried weigth), the reduction of the use of water of 490 ton/year, the full recycling of the produced solid waste up to 165 ton/year, the reduction of energy consumption in finishing from the current 2.38 kWh/m2 to the expected 0.66 kWh/m2 of finished product. The new micro-finishing process will avoid also the use of 200 grinding wheels per year. Considering that the aim of the new product is to substitute natural stone, it is also expected a reduction of this natural resource exploitation of 15’000 cubic meters per year (considering an average thickness of the typical planar product of 30 mm).
Set up of an innovative micro-structured polishing treatment for tiles and natural stones that involve important environmental benefits and improve the technological characteristics of the products;
There will be a saving of 500 ton/year of water and an equivalent reduction in the polluting sludge production;
There will be a saving of raw material in order of 165 ton/year and a reduction of 70% of the energy consumption (0,66 Kwh/m2 instead of 2,38) in its preparation phase;
There will be no longer the need to use about 200 grinding wheels per year;
The development of the project should help to reduce the mining of natural stones and to increase the use of artificial ones, increasing the esthetical effects.
Ecostone è in gres porcellanato e possiede caratteristiche tecniche eccezionali: ottima resistenza chimica, all’usura, al gelo e allo scivolamento (R12).

What started last fall as an idea during World Green Building Day, culminated with representatives from both the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and Green Building Council Italia (GBC Italia) signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) designed as a collaborative partnership between the two organizations, furthering green building and promoting carbon emissions reductions in Italy and worldwide.
At the heart of the partnership, GBC Italia will be the first organization in the European Union that has decided to implement the LEED green building rating system. In the GBC Italia version of LEED, local standards and codes will be referenced, Italian-specific units will be incorporated, and alternative compliance paths will be provided as appropriate to account for regional variances and contexts. The MOU also agrees to collaboration between the two green building councils through the sharing of tools, research and information around green building.
“The collaboration of USGBC and GBC Italia offer an unprecedented opportunity to make a difference in this time of unparalleled environmental awareness,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, USGBC. “Green buildings address a number of important global issues but we can’t do it alone. Working collaboratively is a critical step towards reaching global solutions.”
“The concept behind green building: building smarter and saving money is also critically important to the multinationals who want to replicate this success in every market across the globe,” added Fedrizzi.
“Harnessing the strengths of partnerships around the world allows us to collectively make a difference in our built environment on a scale that otherwise would not be possible,” said Scot Horst, Senior Vice President of LEED, USGBC.
“LEED has been very successful in the U.S. in transforming the approach to building design, construction and operation,” said Mario Zoccatelli, Presidente del GBC Italia. “After reviewing all of the existing green building tools out there, we ultimately chose LEED because of USGBC’s history of innovation and its flexible approach.”
The LEED green building certification system is the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. Over 32,000 projects are currently participating in the commercial and institutional LEED rating systems, comprising over 9.6 billion square feet of construction space in all 50 U.S. states and 114 countries across the globe.
By using less energy, LEED-certified buildings save money; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and contribute to a healthier environment for everyone. Building smarter and saving money -- are critically important to the multinationals who want to replicate their success in every market across the globe

Milan Week of Design 2009
The architect Roberto Semprini presents ArtHouse installation
Roberto Semprini – ArtHouse
Torneria, Via Tortona 32 – first floor, Milan
from 22 to 27 April, 10.00am - 10.00pm
cocktail: 23 April, 07.00pm - 11.00pm
press preview: 21 April, 03.00pm - 07.00pm
During the vibrant Milanese design event 2009, the architect Roberto Semprini presents in collaboration with Effeitalia, Arte and Omexco, ArtHouse, a large loft, where the beauty of sophisticated materials floats in the air like suspended paintings, while the design objects turn into domestic sculptures, scenic elements of a new house-museum.
In creating ArtHouse, Roberto Semprini takes inspiration from three major masters of architecture and art: Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe and Piet Mondrian. In 1917, Wright did claim he wanted to merge art with architecture, turning the house into a real artwork. This was the source of inspiration for Semprini’s ArtHouse, where every single detail, even objects, finishes and materials are given a new meaning in order to create a great work of art.
The plan of Semprini’s ArtHouse is based on Mondrian’s 1914 painting “The Sea”, where the horizon and the sea merge and the light reflects off water, defining the dimensional levels. Taking inspiration from this painting, the ArtHouse’s plan lacks the traditional space references of interior architecture, giving life to a fluid and dynamic space. The free space organization enables Semprini to refer to a concept already described by Mies van der Rohe: "furnishing objects are three-dimensional sculptures within the environment that can be admired walking around them".
Roberto Semprini’s ArtHouse will be created in collaboration with the main partner Effeitalia, whose new wallpaper collections Arte and Omexco turn into suspended paintings, becoming the real protagonists of the interior. They transform into an ideal scenery for objects designed by Roberto Semprini, produced by companies like Edra, Edilco, Hellos, Il Laboratorio dell’Imperfetto, Mastella, Morfeus, Talenti, TM Italia Cucine, Palazzetti, Pedrali e Variazioni.
Visitors can admire and walk around the objects, complements and furnishings by further sponsors of ArtHouse installation like All+, Paola Orsoni and Sagni. In addition to wallpaper, other product lines, usually used as floor coverings, manufactured by Gardenia Orchidea, Venerom and Area Pavimenti will be displayed as suspended paintings.
